Description

Stunning big wooden SONGYE mask, Democratic Republic of Congo, Africa. 
Wood, handcarved, the handcarved stripes painted in various light and dark brown colors . The mask can be dated around to the first half of the 20th century.
Conditions: good conditions with traces of use and age. On the crest a broken piece of wood was painted in black , on the back a little piece of wood is broken (please see the pictures). All in all a very nice mask with a beautiful patina. 
Height 50 cm, (with crest)  width 20 cm, depth 23 cm. 

Provenience/Provenance: The mask comes from a private german collection.

Beschreibung

Schöne, große Holzmaske der SONGYE, Demokratische Republik Kongo, Afrika. 

Holz, handgeschnitzt, die eingekerbten Streifendekoration mehrfarbig in hellen und dunklen Brauntönen gefasst. Die Maske stammt vermutlich aus der 1. Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts.

Zustand: Guter Zustand aber mit Gebrauchs- und Altersspuren. An dem Kamm ein Teil Holz ausgebrochen, wurde schwarz bemalt, hinten ein kleines Stück holz abgebrochen (siehe Beschreibung und Fotos). Ansonsten eine tolle alte Maske mit einer schönen Patina.

Höhe 50 cm (mit Kamm), Breite 20 cm, Tiefe 23 cm.

Provenienz: Die Maske stammt aus einer alten deutschen Privatsammlung aus Frankfurt.
